Stedman began in 1841 when John Culbreth Blocker built a stagecoach house and post office, and the community shipped produce, forest products, and cotton under its original name, Blockersville. The Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad reached town in 1890, driving new commercial growth, and the community was later renamed for Confederate veteran Charles Manly Stedman and incorporated in the early 20th century — sources split between 1913 and 1917 for the exact date. The Maxwell House in Stedman joined the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.
